Andrew Board Nelson’s Elma Turner Library could be moved to Trafalgar St under an idea mooted by mayor Rachel Reese. The city’s main library has money allocated to it in the long term plan for redevelopment. Nelson MP Nick Smith was the first guest speaker for the NRA, which is planning a series of meetings throughout the local body election year. He spoke to around 60 people who gathered at 623 in the City about challenges facing the region. He said Nelson is the second fastest growing region in the country and spoke of how key infrastructure was needed for it to continue to grow. He likened the $70 million Lee Valley Dam and the controversial Southern Link motorway to the Cut made through the Boulder Bank in 1905, allowing ships to enter Port Nelson. “We are huge benefactors of the infrastructure that has been built by previous generations. When our city forefathers put the Cut in the port, there was a rampant argument over the huge cost to the people of this city. Those brave forefathers of our city made exactly the right call and the port would not exist and this town would not be the buoyant, fantastic place that it is, if they had not made that call. “We owe it, in the same way that they put

Local papers sign on to support Giants Nelson’s most successful national sporting team has been given a lift by the region’s top newspaper group. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants has teamed up with Page Media Ltd, which publishes Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and nelsonlive.co.nz. The newspaper group has signed on as the print media partner for the Giants’ 2016 season. Giants captain Sam Dempster says the NBL basketball season is shaping up to be a big one for the three-time champions, with a team stacked with local players and a move back to their home court at the Trafalgar Centre. “We’ve got a good local core and two imports who have fitted in really well with the group, and with Jarrod Kenny coming back from Perth as well it is an exciting team to lead.” The Giants spent the weekend at a pre-season Blitz tournament in Porirua, before starting the season with a four-game away trip, starting on March 11. Sam says the entire team is looking forward to getting back inside the Trafalgar Centre for its home games. “Playing at Saxton’s was nice but it’s not

An historic church on Haven Rd is being brought back to life, thanks to a local photographer who is passionate about preserving Nelson’s history. Jose Cano brought the old Seafarers Mission building last year, and has been working with a local carpenter and Arthouse Architects ever since to bring it back to its former glory. “The idea is to recover it and bring it back to life,” says Jose. “When we found it, it was covered with asbestos. Now we are basically taking out the boards and replacing them. It’s a big job of love.” The building is currently off its foundations and will be moved on to a newly-constructed base soon. Originally constructed in native timber, Jose says that they have been able to recover a lot of the rimu from The Guards Sea Services’ boatshed, which has recently been pulled down. “Nothing gets wasted. Most of it is in very good condition, which shows just how durable

Once it’s finished it will be a beautiful place – it has beautiful big arch supporting the roof.” Jose says there are not many records of the building, but he believes it was built sometime in the 1890s. “It has been many things – the Seafarers’ chapel originally, a diesel engine repair workshop and an upholstery shop,” he says. But Jose will be taking a different direction with the building and is hoping to turn the space into a cafe, which he will lease out. “It’s a nice space with lots of parking and it’s close to the sea. It needs to go back to having

people inside it. “I took it on because Nelson is at risk of losing many old buildings. It’s hard to restore them, there is no help and the cheapest option is usually to pull them down and build something else, so I thought it would be a pity if it was lost. These building are good for Nelson and need to be treated differently.” Jose says they still have about six months of work ahead of them, but are not going to rush the process. “We cannot rush these things, and I hope that we will have more buildings restored in Nelson.”

In terms of the functionality of that building, we’ve looked at it a bit more, there has been some demand from event organisers for a 10001200 seat space, can we create that, and we think we can and the marginal cost for doing it we think is worthwhile.” She says she still supports the idea of a separate performing arts centre for the region. “The long term plan does have money in there looking at a performing arts centre and looking at the viability of that,” she says. “I’m still interested in that and I know it’s one of the subjects where people say ‘we can’t afford it,’ but actually we always need to be looking at that and where we are going in the future. I feel sufficiently positive about this region and its future that it is right that we look at that project again.” The Trafalgar Centre is due to open again after major earthquake strengthening work later this month.

A 1000-1200 seat theatre for musical concerts has been proposed to be built inside the Trafalgar Centre, to help attract more acts to the city. The plan is a part of the draft annual plan that is expected to be adopted by the council on Thursday and open for submissions from March 11. Mayor Rachel Reese says $400,000, along with some money in the long term budget for temporary seating and lighting, is proposed to be spent on facilities to allow the centre to be converted into a theatre for concerts and shows. But she insists it should not be seen as competition to the Theatre Royal, or a substitute for a performing arts centre. “It’s not a substitute for a tiered seating auditorium. That’s a different project altogether. It’s a different market from the Theatre Royal and hopefully we’ll draw more events to Nelson.” Rachel says the Trafalgar Centre has been a ‘major challenge’ for the council but she says it is important to make it as functional as possible. “The opportunities around that space are great for trade events, and actually having a civic building

Locals buy replacement for tourists' stolen car

A group of Nelson businesses has replaced a car belonging to a pair of English tourists after it was stolen and dumped in the Appleby River. CCTV footage shows Leanne Majehrzak and Ryan Roberts’ car being stolen from outside their Nelson city hostel around 4.50am. The car, which contained the majority of their possessions, was taken on a “joyride” before being dumped it into the Appleby River. Leanne says her partner Ryan went to drive the car to work, but came back into their hostel saying it was gone. “I was like ‘what do you mean the car is gone?’ And he said, ‘it’s gone, it’s not there,’ and that’s when we realised it had been stolen. “We were devastated, all our winter belongings and quite a lot of other stuff was in there.” Nothing was stolen, but due to a petrol leak most of their belongings had to be thrown away. Leanne and Ryan had just decided to use buses for the rest of their trip when the phone rang, and BMTT’s Terry Thompson was on the other end. After hearing about the couple’s

Basically he said, ‘nah, it’s too damaged, there’s no coming back, but me and the guys have been talking and we want to buy you a new car. We don't want you to leave New Zealand with a bad impression,’ I couldn’t believe it,” says Leanne. Terry raised funds from local businesses and three days later the couple had themselves a Toyota Estima. Terry says he just had to help Leanne and Ryan. “I felt really sorry for the poor buggers because everything they had was in the back and

somebody just stole the car, put a brick on the accelerator, put it in gear and drove it into the river. I didn’t want them to think Nelson was a bad place so we brought them another wagon on Saturday.” Terry’s gift couldn’t have fallen into more grateful hands, Leanne and Ryan say they are “so incredibly thankful”. “They’ve all been so helpful, they’ve pretty much done everything for us, Terry and his wife Debbie are just unbelievable. I went to see them today and I took all the guys in the workshop a huge box of beers, a card, and some flowers and wine, and they were so happy. It’s the least we can do.”

Nicola Bare, who is the programme and facilities manager at the Victory Community Centre, says the lunches have been popular, with orders growing to around 85 a week. “Kids are enjoying it and many parents I have spoken to are over the moon with how easy the ordering process is and that their children are not saying they are hungry as soon as they get home from school. Parents are also getting into the routine of ordering and we anticipate numbers to go up over the next few weeks.” Big Play Out, Tuesday, February 16: Hundreds of families turned up to the Tahunanui Sportsfield on Saturday, February 20, for the Big Play Out. The annual event focused on extending learning through play and getting the families out having fun. Sweetened drinks pulled from hospital shelves Juice, flavoured water and smoothie drinks have all been banned by the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. This move follows its removal of sugarsweetened beverages from all its premises – including Nelson Hospital – two years ago. From May 1, these drinks will no longer be available from hospital cafes, shops and vending machines, nor will they be served to patients. Instead, patients and visitors will be offered a range of water, coconut water, plain milk, plain milk alternatives, teas and coffee.

Volunteers wanted for ‘bioblitz’, Tuesday, February 16: The weekend’s ‘bioblitz’ at the Brook Sanctuary was huge success with over 60 people joining in. Rick Field, project coordinator and educator at the sanctuary, says they had an absolutely fantastic time and over the 24 hour period 261 observations were made including plants, birds, fish, insects, fungi, and even a bat was detected. A highlight was the number of families involved and the use of the iNaturalist app to collate and tally all the observations. The success of one non-profit group has forced the evacuation of another. Last year, Habitat for Humanity opened its Restore on Quarantine Rd and, with plenty of space, offered the back shed to Menzshed Nelson. But before volunteers of the Menzshed could even get started they’ve had to move on. President of the group, Graeme O’Brien, says they’re now confident of gaining a shed at Founders Heritage Park. “Basically the Restore has been such a success they need the space that they originally offered to us. So we’re moving out, but we have an application with Founders for a shed there that’s unused and we’re really confident of it being accepted.” Graeme says a move to Graeme Founders would be the O’Brien. “perfect fit”. “As much as we’re disappointed, good on Habitat for Humanity, we were only going to be there if it worked for both groups. But we feel pretty confident that we’ll be in there because we’d be such a good fit with the park.” Menzshed is a community shed that allows people to come and share their skills in a friendly relaxed atmosphere.

Consent approved for Stoke Community Centre

Rai Valley to host A&P Show Kate Russell Fancy dressed pets, rolling pumpkins, home produce, plus much more will be on show this weekend at the 82nd Rai Valley A&P show. The annual show will be held on at the Carluke Domain this Saturday, with gates opening at 7am. One of the big events will be the ‘Rai Challenge,’ where competitors carry a possum or a pig around an obstacle course. Other attractions will include wood chopping, show jumping, live music, a grand parade at 2pm, animal nursery, vintage displays, and Sturgeon Amusements, which will feature the same merry-go-round that was at the show 70 years ago. There will also be a range of indoor exhibits including home produce, crafts, farm and garden produce, photography and a children's section. The show’s secretary Tash McQueen says a new thing they are doing this year is ‘Endro Pump,’ which involves rolling giant pumpkins down a bank to see whose goes the furthest. “It’s a great family day out,” she says. “We would like to thank all of our sponsors that help us out, and it’s great that the show is so well supported by both the Blenheim and Nelson communities.”

Staff room spruce up for ECE centres Nelson early childhood centres are being given the opportunity to give their staff rooms a makeover, with a competition being run by a locally-run teacher support website called ‘Happy ECE Teachers.’ Founder Rebekah Cook is celebrating two and a half years of running the website, which aims to provide information and advice for early childhood teachers on a wide range of issues, as well as running regular competitions and special offers. Plans for the Stoke Community Centre that were released last year.

Resource consent has been granted for the Stoke’s $6 million community centre, but it comes with restrictions around the use of the centre on Saturdays. The resource consent hearing, which took place in January, revealed that the proposed 48 parking spaces at the centre may not be enough to accommodate the number of people

using the centre, especially during Saturday sports. But the decision of the hearing has revealed that, to control parking, the centre will be limited to 50 people on Saturdays when there is significant sporting activity at Greenmeadows Reserve. Any submitter or applicant has until 15 March to appeal the decision.

nelson arts festival transition Group Nelson City Council is calling for nominations for members for the Nelson Arts Festival Transition Group. Candidates with a keen interest in the arts and the Nelson Arts Festival, experience at governance or board level and/or a background in law, accounting or policy work would be ideal for the role. People with a strong sense of community would also be preferred. The purpose of the Transition Group is to provide recommendations and a transition plan for establishing a Nelson Arts Festival governance structure independent of Council. It will also provide a shadowing role for the 2016 festival. There are five member positions including one as the role of Chairperson. No remuneration is offered for these positions. Brand new boat to mix with classics at this year’s boat show Kate Russell

One local man will be bringing his 50 years of boat-making experience to Lake Rotoiti this weekend for the 17th New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show. Basil Hart, who was a boat builder before he retired, has been attending the show since 2002, and this year will be bringing his freshly-built ‘clinker’ dinghy for the first time. Taking four weeks for him to build, the yet to be named boat it is made from a variety of different wood, with the keel being recycled from an old Kauri mantelpiece. Basil is expecting there to be around 10 similar boats in his class and regards the show as a “great event” with lot of people attending from outside of Nelson. “It’s a great spot with the big foreshore and the planes flying above,” he says. At 801m above sea level, it is the highest altitude boat show in New Zealand, and organizer Pete Rainey says they will be sticking with the usual format of boat displays on the land in the morning and races on the lake in the afternoon. “From early morning on both days of the weekend, you can wander around the boats on land, chat with the owners, view displays with stories of restoration and rebuild, and then watch the races on the lake in the afternoon,” he says. “We have a lot of fun, from the slightly

Several of the display boats will be at the lakeside on show, but those that are too big to move will stay in the museum. Boat show judging will take place on Saturday, ahead of an evening awards ceremony at the Alpine Lodge. At stake is the Jens Hansen Trophy, awarded for good

looks, craftsmanship and the boat’s history. Other awards include prizes for best new restoration, best steamboat, best jetpropelled craft and best themed display. Races will be held for yachts, rowboats, seagull-motored dinghies, poppers, canoes, child rowers and swimmers. Celebrating 50 years of Nayland College Nayland College is about to hit a major milestone. For 50 years the school has proudly served the community, offering a modern, progressive approach to education. Over 300 ex pupils are already registered and looking forward to heading back to school, while organisers are working hard to make this anniversary something truly special. The event kicks off on Thursday, March 24 and will run until Sunday, March 27, featuring a full programme of activities where past pupils can catch up with fellow class mates and reminisce about their college days. A powhiri will officially start the reunion celebration, followed by a tour of Nayland College with a bit of a twist. Ex pupils will get the opportunity to go ‘back to school’, taking part in classes such as PE, science and hospitality, while exploring the current school facilities at the same time.

It’s completely up to the attendees whether they take part and how long they stay, and organisers are already excited to hear of ex pupils uncovering remnants of their old school uniforms which will make an appearance on the day. Friday will see attendees pick up their registration bags and merchandise and prepare themselves for the weekend of activities ahead. The first major event, starting on Friday evening, preceded by formal year group photos, is a chatters and platters function, where food and drink will be available as ex pupils get the chance to catch up with old friends and explore a display of school memorabilia. On Saturday, Nayland has dedicated the day to sports. Basketball, netball, rugby, football and volleyball will all be taking place throughout the day, offering former staff and pupils the chance to interact across

options available for ex students to reconnect, not just with their fellow pupils, but with their hometown. Whether it’s a game of golf, a walk along Tahuna Beach, a drink in the Honest Lawyer, or a cycle along the Great Taste Trail, there is something for everybody to enjoy. There are a number of longserving staff members currently working at Nayland, and Sunday will also offer up the opportunity for past and present staff to catch up during a special function at the college. NAYLAND COLLEGE In the 1950s and 60s, the Stoke area began to see a lot of growth in population and housing, which in turn saw plans put in place for a new college, along with Nayland Primary School, Birchwood Primary school and Enner Glynn School. During the construction of the school the main classroom building was called H Block, but the design proved so popular that it was used in other schools around the country and the design was consequently known by many schools around the country as Nelson block design. Bill Kane took on the role of foundation principal, after he and his family moved down from Levin where he had been a deputy principal at Horowhenua College. The young principal was looking forward to the challenge of founding the new school and performed the task with huge enthusiasm, designing the schools motto, crest and philosophy’s which are still part

Nayland’s new student leaders announced With a new year comes new student leaders for Nayland College and this year’s group are eager to leave their footprint on the school. Kyohei Noguchi, Taylah Kirker and brother-sister duo Cullen and Tessa Riley were announced as the 2016 student leaders two weeks ago, and are gearing up for the fun and challenging year ahead. Taylah says she was over the moon when she found out she had been given the role.

“I have wanted to be a student leader ever since my brother was a student leader here.” “It’s such a great opportunity and this year is such a memorable mark for the school. Meeting all the former students and leaders, and seeing what they think of what we’re doing with the school, is going to be really cool,” says Taylah. Principal Daniel Wilson says Nayland College has had student

leaders since its inception and their roles are vital to the school. “We have student leaders for many reasons, mainly to be the face of the school from a student perspective, to lead student initiatives, to lead various activities and events across the school, but really it’s about growing their confidence as leaders of the future.” Daniel says he’s keen to see what the group do with their year as student leaders.

Raft of new staff for Port Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

Port Nelson has employed a raft of new personnel to leadership positions. Ramon Tovey has joined the company as forestry and general cargo manager at Tasman Bay Stevedoring, Jonny Cook is the new container terminal manager and Shelley Spencer is senior manager of people and safety.

The client liaison side of the Port’s business has also been boosted, with the arrival of Kate Riding in the new role of client services advisor. Kate will work with business development manager Eugene Beneke, who joined Port Nelson a year ago. “We are delighted to welcome these new

Nelson’s only emergency housing unit has closed – and although there are families who are desperate to use it, it will remain off-limits until it can be moved to a new site. The self-contained unit, located at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, has been providing urgent short-term accommodation for women, children and young people in Nelson for 10 years. But park management have shut the unit down following an incident in January where a tenant abused both visitors and staff. Nelson Tasman Housing Trust director Carrie Mozena says they have not been able to find an alternative site for the unit and are putting a call out to the Nelson community for a suitable place they can relocate it to. They are also in need of donations for the operation of the unit. “We need to move it to a new site as soon as possible,” says Carrie. “We are getting phone calls from families needing to use it, and it's crazy that we’ve got

Murchison kayaker wins Buller Fest Murchison paddler Rob Hervey showed his class in winning the men’s open Astral Boater Cross race at the Buller Fest white water kayaking and rafting festival, based at Murchison, at the weekend. Rob won the opening event of the three-day festival held on Friday, advancing through the heats of four kayakers before prevailing in the final on the Matakitaki River. Murchison’s Jess Matheson finished second in the open women’s final to Toni George of Rotorua. Jess was also second in the NZ Kayak School kayak slalom held on O’Sullivan’s Rapid on the Buller River on Saturday. NZ Kayak School operator and legendary paddler Mick Hopkinson finished second in the veteran’s men’s category, while Marahau’s Phil Palzer showed great balance and skill to win the Fergs Elite Stand Up Paddleboard race, also held on O’Sullivan’s Rapid. “It was quite a feat to get down the rapid standing up - only three of the paddlerboarders got through,” one of the organisers, Aimee Macdonald, says. “There was quite

a bit of water in the Buller so it made things interesting - it made a couple of the gates in the kayak slalom very challenging.” Aimee says about 250 paddlers from all over the country competed at the festival that also included a rafter cross race and a fun Cardboard Cup event. “We had a good number of entries including 24 juniors all the way from Alexandra and a good turnout of spectators. We had good weather and good flows, so it was a good weekend all round.” One of the highlights of the weekend was getting former Murchison rafting guide Jezza Williams, who is a tetraplegic, into a raft for the Rafter Cross. Jezza became a tetraplegic after suffering a spinal injury in an accident in Switzerland. NMIT won the inter-polytechnic competition based on the number of points gained by competitors and volunteers.

Netball volunteers recognized for decades of work Two of netball's most dedicated volunteers were awarded Life Membership of the Nelson Netball Centre last week, recognising a combined total of a century of service to the sport. Dianne Gregg and Marilyn Milne received their Life Membership at the annual general meeting of the Nelson Netball Centre last Tuesday. Another four volunteers, Andy Vincent, Priyani De SilvaCurrie, Carol Cook and Vicki Reid, also received long service

awards at the meeting . Centre chairperson Julie Baxendine says Dianne and Marilyn are "most definitely worthy recipients of the Life Memberships". Julie says Marilyn had "filled just about every possible role in netball for over 50 years" while Dianne has "worked tirelessly for our game with real dedication". "Dianne's heart has been in netball forever," Julie says. "She was the face of Nelson Netball for so many years and has been a great

She says Marilyn is especially passionate about developing young netballers after working as the netball co-ordinator for Nelson College for Girls for 14 years. "Thanks to her care and dedication, Nelson is fortunate to have a significant number of young umpires coming through the ranks. Marilyn spends every Saturday during the season encouraging and supporting these umpires." Marilyn says she has been involved in netball since she started playing as a seven-year-old in Dunedin. "I just love the game and I love the idea of people playing it and helping people get involved in it. You don't do these things to get recognition but I feel quite proud to be recognised among my peers, especially alongside Dianne - she is an amazing lady." Although Dianne, 74, has been "hooked" on netball for over 60 years, first as a player then as a coach, manager and administrator, she admits she was "very surprised" to receive the Life Membership. "I never dreamed it was coming. I've spent a long time in the sport but I do it because I love the game and the people. "I played my first game when I was nine or 10 in Alexandra, and I got in the Central Otago reps and I've been hooked ever since. As soon as that whistle goes at the start of the season, I'm into it.' Andy and Vicki have contributed to a number of roles in Nelson netball, especially in umpiring where they have officiated at a national level. Priyani has been a long-serving and successful coach and administrator, while Carol has been a coach and manager and played a key role in the centre's media liaison.
